I have Loved Brunswick Stew all of my life. This is as close to what I have enjoyed as I have been able to find. I have made it 4 times in the last month making several changes to vegetables and different BBQ sauces that have made the stew taste different ways. I am making my final batch with what I hope to be a recipe that I will use forever and will pass along to friends and Family. I love this with chicken and shredded pork (BBQ). I have also added potatoes. Also, I like to serve with either Hush Puppies or Fried Cornbread.


A plaque on an old iron pot in Brunswick, Georgia, says the first Brunswick stew was made in it on July 2, 1898, on nearby St. Simons Island.[5] A competing story claims a Virginia state legislator's chef invented the recipe in 1828 on a hunting expedition.[6][7] Neither claim traces to the origin of those regions.


I looked through SO many recipes before I decided on this one. Everything was absolutely spot on. Picked up the pulled meats from my local BBQ place and followed all of your recommendations, including adding a bit more chicken stock (1 cup) to thin out and about a 1/4 cup more BBQ sauce to compensate for the extra liquid. I also went with the BBQ sauce you recommended, and it was perfect! Having lived in Florida, where you can get this really easily, and now living in Massachusetts where you can never find Brunswick Stew, I was over the moon to find a recipe I could make at home that tasted like all of the best stews I got when I lived further south. Before it was demolished, the Pharr Road Old Hickory House was our family favorite. At its peak, The Old Hickory House had 23 locations, with most of them in and around Atlanta. Augusta, Athens, Chattanooga and Tallahassee also had single locations. Today, only two remain (Dunwoody and Tucker). Opened in the early 1950's The Old Hickory House is still owned by the Black Family. The Old Hickory House pit-cooks/smokes their Boston Butts only with hickory wood. My tender and juicy sliced pork sandwich topped with sauce and pickles was superb! Their house Q sauce is quite excellent! My baked beans were outstanding, the Brunswick stew was solidly peachy and the sweet tea was wonderful. "Put some South in your mouth" and enjoy.


We often make this stew while camping in the Shenandoah Mountains. Since we usually have the entire day to relax, I start the recipe just after lunch and let it slow cook in our cast iron 8-quart camping Lodge Dutch Oven.


This sounds delicious. I've never tried brunswick stew. What an awesome camp meal. Love that dutch oven! Would you believe we've had a fire restriction in effect for the past FOUR years while camping? It's been so long since I cooked on anything other than a campstove, it's just wrong.
